Misery Loves Company Japanese Metal Style

June 12th, 2008 by stv

I’ve had the worst music stuck in my head for days, so I thought I’d share it:

Yup, “Rock and Roll Crazy Nights” by Japanese hair-metal band Loudness. I watched the PowerHour on MuchMusic way too much in the 80s - chalk it up to the mountain-sized crush I used to have on VJ Teresa Roncon - and as a result I have all this cheese in my subconscious. Grrr.

Oh well, I can’t purge the chorus from my head, so I’m using the internet to spread it like a virus. Watch if you dare (suckers).

So, where are they all now?

Get Your Phreak615 On

April 16th, 2008 by stv

So what’s the deal? For the last couple of weeks, there have been little snippets of “pirate” video sneaking their way into MuchMusic television broadcasts, which has people all abuzz wondering if someone is actually hacking into a live broadcast.

Credit for the “heist” is being taken by one Phreak615, who is telling the world how brilliant he is in his own blog, literally referring to himself as “the second coming.” He claims to play guitar in a band called The Nunnery, but they appear to be the only local act without a MySpace page

So, how does one hack into a televised broadcast? According to Phreak615, you have to have access. That’s right; it’s an inside job. “I have direct access to our digital media server,” he boasts in his blog, allowing him to hack in with a WIFI laptop from his car when he’s not at work.

Anderson Cooper in Oscar's garbage can

OK, here’s the most surreal thing I’ve seen in a while: CNN’s Anderson Cooper reporting live from Oscar the Grouch’s garbage can.

Mr. Cooper did a great job, and I laughed my butt off. If you missed it, that ought to learn you for not watching Sesame Street religiously.

If I didn’t have kids, I’d miss out on so much.

A Seriously Bad Dream

December 12th, 2007 by stv

Last night, I had a very bad dream. Not a nightmare, just a dream that sucked, a total waste of my subconscious mind.

Sometimes I dream in movies or TV shows, which is likely a reflection of how much the media controls my day to day existence. But usually the dreams are playfully imaginative with decent twists and strange scene morphs that end up with really bizarro juxtapositions that involve things like Tom Selleck playing the saxophone while wearing snowshoes in my grandmother’s washroom.

TV That Follows Through

December 10th, 2007 by stv

I’m often irked by TV shows that’ll mention a silly website name just for a cheap laugh but fail to go the extra mile for those that bother to follow up online. Being a work-from-home internet geek, I often have my WIFI laptop on hand, if not in hand, when the TV is on, and I have to say I’m happy to see that some folks in show business seem to be catching on.

The Pagan Roots of Christ

December 7th, 2007 by stv

Just when I thought I was done discussing the pagan roots of Christmas I stumbled across this really interesting documentary, The Pagan Christ, on the CBC last night. The film dealt mainly with the issues raised by Tom Harpur’s book The Pagan Christ: Recovering The Lost Light. The book examines the strange correlations between the Gospels of the New Testament and the ancient Egyptian myth of Horus. Apparently, according to all these ancient rolls of papyrus decoded using the Rosetta Stone, there are about 180 elements of Horus’ story that end up in the New Testament, including divine conception, being born in a hovel, the visit of the 3 mystic sages, the gathering of 12 disciples, rubbing the authorities the wrong way, being crucified (evidently not a Roman invention), and the resurrection. Apparently his birth was also celebrated around December 25th, and even terms such as the “son of man” and the “lamb of God” have their roots in the Horus myth. I thought it a strange coincidence that when I start coming to terms with the fact that the biggest Christian holiday is really borrowed from the ancient celebrations of pagan sun gods (most notably Mithra & Saturn) I find out that Christ himself might simply be an embellishment of another ancient sun god. Evidentally, even names like Christ and Mary have roots in ancient Egyptian.

My Son Thinks He’s Snoopy

November 30th, 2007 by stv

A Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack AlbumIt appears my two and a half year old son has picked up one of my more annoying childhood habits, putting his own cute yet disgusting spin on it. When I was a kid, I felt compelled to duplicate anything that I’d seen get a laugh on TV (If I could only have back the time I’d wasted pretending I was Mork from Ork), and it appears that he’s following in my footsteps in this regard.

Although this will be his third Christmas, it’s the first time he’s noticing patterns and sensing that we’re building up to something pretty big. To help set the mood, we’ve been using our personal video recorder (PVR) to record some of the shows they’ve already been showing for at least a week on network TV. Among these have been some of the classics, such as Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original with Boris Karloff, of course) and A Charlie Brown Christmas (with its lovely soundtrack by Vince Guaraldi). Attachment Parenting on Wisteria Lane?

November 26th, 2007 by stv

The Family Bed by Tine TheveninAs I was blogging last night, my wife was watching the latest episode of Desperate Housewives on TV. Well, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather when the Martha Stewart wannabe character announced she wanted to adopt the concept of the Family Bed while raising her illegitimate child as her own.

As messed up as that may sound, I guess anything that helps get the word out about attachment parenting can’t be a bad thing, even if the same character also made a big deal out of circumcising the kid because just she didn’t want his willy to look funny.

I’m always genuinely surprised when I see the concepts that shaped the way my wife and I decided to raise our children being referenced in mainstream media. For anyone else interested in co-sleeping with their infants, you might also want to check out Three in a Bed. As the pizzeria guy said on the show, you just have to get creative. ;) Read the rest of this entry »
