Camp NaNoWriMo – April 2014

April 1st, 2014 by Steve

Today is the first day of the April 2014 edition of Camp NaNoWriMo, an online writing camp that promises “a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing.”

Since this is my first attempt at writing a novel or participating in a writing camp or class, and considering that March was a nightmare for me and April’s not looking better, I’ve decided to set the bar as low as I can for myself; my goal is to get 10,000 words of my first draft done by the end of the month.

My working title of my novel is Doug the Cynic. It’s very loosely based on the life of Diogenes, the contemporary of Plato. I became ware of him through an episode of Sherlock (Mycroft’s anti-social social club is Diogenes Club). Anyway, I looked him up and liked what I saw. Then I started imagining what would happen if you took Diogenes’ whole life and compressed it into the life of a modern-day Canadian boy. Next thing you know, I got a story pouring out.

SO, first day I’ve pumped out 992 words of my 10,000 word quota. At this rate I can finish on the 11th. I doubt I’ll be able to sustain this rate, but we’ll see how it goes. In the end I’ll need 50,000 words to qualify as a short novel, so eventually I’ll need every word I can get.
