10 things you ought to know about me

Once upon a time, I used to build websites for a company named DWL that was eventually acquired by IBM in 2005.

  3. Shortly after the acquisition, my wife and I decided that our new son should never be put in day care if we could help it.
  4.

  5. It wasn’t that we’d had any bad experiences when our daughter was in day care, we just thought that it would make our family stronger if we could do it all “in-house.”
  6.

  7. About a week before I was to give my notice, IBM informed me that my position was being eliminated and I got laid off with a much better package than expected. Things were looking up.
  8.

  9. I needed to bring in a bit of an income while being a stay-at-home dad just hanging out with the kids.
  10.

  11. I was pretty much sick to death of designing/building/optimizing websites by that point, but I was able to get some decent freelance gigs doing just that sort of thing (still do to this day).
  12.

  13. Somewhere along the line, I got pretty nutty about blogging. It still doesn’t pay very well, but it’s fun. I do my own thing here, I write about music at www.gitpop.com, and for some reason they actually pay me to write over at blogto.com.
  14.

  15. Someday the kids are going to be in school full-time, and I’m going to have to figure out what to do with my days.
  16.

  17. I haved no idea what I’m going to do with myself when that day comes, but I’ve gotten hooked on the freelance lifestyle. The only thing I do know is that I never want to work in an office again, and I never want to have to write up another résumé.

  19. Eventually, as implausible as it may sound, I’d love to do something with music. I used to study jazz at Mohawk College in Hamilton (won a scholarship, graduated with honours). Perhaps I’m a little old to be a rock star now, but who knows, maybe I’ll figure something out. Or maybe I’ll figure out how to make a living as a freelance music writer. Who knows?
