10 things you ought to know about me

Photo by Steve Edgar Once upon a time, I used to build websites for a company named DWL that was eventually acquired by IBM in 2005.
- Shortly after the acquisition, my wife and I decided that our new son should never be put in day care if we could help it.
- It wasn’t that we’d had any bad experiences when our daughter was in day care, we just thought that it would make our family stronger if we could do it all “in-house.”
- About a week before I was to give my notice, IBM informed me that my position was being eliminated and I got laid off with a much better package than expected. Things were looking up.
- I needed to bring in a bit of an income while being a stay-at-home dad just hanging out with the kids.
- I was pretty much sick to death of designing/building/optimizing websites by that point, but I was able to get some decent freelance gigs doing just that sort of thing (still do to this day).
- Somewhere along the line, I got pretty nutty about blogging. It still doesn’t pay very well, but it’s fun. I do my own thing here, I write about music at www.gitpop.com, and for some reason they actually pay me to write over at blogto.com.
- Someday the kids are going to be in school full-time, and I’m going to have to figure out what to do with my days.
- I haved no idea what I’m going to do with myself when that day comes, but I’ve gotten hooked on the freelance lifestyle. The only thing I do know is that I never want to work in an office again, and I never want to have to write up another résumé.
- Eventually, as implausible as it may sound, I’d love to do something with music. I used to study jazz at Mohawk College in Hamilton (won a scholarship, graduated with honours). Perhaps I’m a little old to be a rock star now, but who knows, maybe I’ll figure something out. Or maybe I’ll figure out how to make a living as a freelance music writer. Who knows?
