A Year in a Day, and the Last Word on Writing Advice

July 21st, 2017 by Steve

Well hey there! I’m celebrating a peculiar anniversary today. A peculiarversary, if you will. It’s been a whole year since I last posted on this blog!

Let’s see, what have we missed? I took a course in short story writing at U of T. It was great. I dedicated over seven months to polishing the story I wrote for that class. It’s awful, and I it will ever see daylight again.

I had a birthday. I mean, lots of people did. Pretty much everyone I know, actually. But mine was a pretty big one. Fifty. I’m now half a century old.

Fifty, you say. And still unpublished? Yup, I’ve always been a procrastinator. But maybe that’ll change. Maybe this year, maybe next. Who knows? The important thing is that I’m working toward a goal, and I’ll get there in my own sweet time.

I’ve started a new category for blog entries: Countdown to Publishing. I will use that to babble about the path I take going from this, unpublished aspiring writer, to that, which will hopefully be published writer. When I start getting paid for my stories, then it’ll be time to figure out a new category, but for now, this should do it.

If you’re hoping for more advice on writing, you’ve come to the wrong place. I’ll save you some time. I’ve read a ton about writing from a myriad of sources, and they all disagree with one another. There’s no bloody consensus on the subject. It’s almost as if it’s a highly idiomatic art form where everyone who practices it has come to it by a unique pathway that can never be rediscovered by anyone else. So let’s just assume that’s true.

There is no right way to write. There are wrong ways, for sure, but maybe what looks wrong initially will turn out to be right in the end.

As near as I can figure, the only thing that people who write for a living have in common is that they write. They spend more time writing than they do either reading or writing about writing. So, since I want to be a writer, no more giving advice on writing, and I’ll do my best to stop reading about it as well.
