Why I’m closing my Facebook fan page

Yeah, not that kind of fan

Yeah, not that kind of fan

I know it’s a bit odd to hear of a musician closing a fan page, but that’s just what I’m doing.

After a few months of making sure that of my music news was shared on my personal Facebook page for all my friends to appreciate as well as my Facebook fan page, I’ve decided that the redundancy is just too tedious for me to bear.

So I’ve decided to discontinue my fan page, and instead I’ve offered Facebook friendship all of my fans that aren’t already on my friends list.

It’s not that big of a stretch when you stop to think about it. If you have an interest in my music I have an interest in you. In fact, I want to know about you. I’m not one of those musicians who thinks of individual fans as statistics on a spreadsheet detailing album, ticket & merchandise sales. I know you’re all unique individuals from all walks of life, and I can’t help thinking that I’d be better off getting to know you all a little bit better.

And Facebook offers me a great way to get to know you better, because I’ll get all your updates aggregated into my news feeder. As you get updates about me I’ll be getting updates about you too. Let’s see Metallica offer you the same deal.

Also, what with Facebook’s new option of getting a username-specific URL, it’s way easier to remember what my Facebook address is now:

Stop by soon if you can. Thanks.

Someone just pointed out that Facebook personal accounts are capped at 5,000 friends whereas no such cap exists for fan pages. While I love the optimism, I think that point is still a long way off. Plenty of time to come up with a Plan B.
