Looking Forward - 2008 Resolutions

January 1st, 2008 by stv

The new year is upon us, and with it comes a whole whack of ill-advised promises to do better this time around. I just wanted to take a few minutes to mention what I’d like achieve in the next twelve months as far as this blog and others are concerned. So, without further ado …

Freelance Music Journalism

About a month ago, I was given the golden opportunity to start a music column over at blogTO.com. I’ve always been very opinionated about music, and extremely support of the music I like, so writing about it is pretty much second nature to me, I guess. Throw in the added bonus that I get to talk to some pretty interesting people along the way and I think I just might have a dream job here.

I guess the only drawback is that the pay is really low. I’m going to level with you, the money’s not pouring in just yet, so I guess I’ll have to figure how to work that into the equation if I’m going to make this work. I guess I’ll have to follow the “do what you love and the money will follow” philosophy and hope it isn’t all bullshit.

So, my New Year’s Resolution regard my music column is to keep it up. I’m going to pump out at least one article a week for the next 52 weeks and see if it’s leading anywhere. If it is, I just might pursue it that much harder. If it isn’t, I might be having too much fun to care, so I guess there’s no way I could lose.

Being a Musician

The last couple of years have been slow for me as a musician. The whole stay-at-home dad trip makes you re-examine all your priorities, and playing in bands, and all the headaches involved therein, just doesn’t do it for me anymore. It’s not a life I want to return to, but I still want to create some music just for my own personal edification.

I made a mistake a couple of years ago and started pursuing the notion that I could write music commercially. I tried to hook up with some indie filmmakers to score their projects, but nothing ever came to fruition. Long story short, I have a hard time writing for anyone else but me. So the solution as I see it is that I’m just going to write for me only now.

I’ve decided to try to record four tunes in 2008. I’m going to try to release each one to coincide with the changing seasons, which means the first one will be available on March 21. I’ll make it a free download for all to share.

Stay-at-Home Fatherhood

My son only has 20 months before he starts school, so I’ve got to remember every day that our time together is limited. I’ve got to keep in mind to make the most of this chance because it’s not going to come around ever again.

So there you have it: write about music, record some music, and have some fun being a dad. Sounds like a plan to me.
