Doing the Never

November 26th, 2007 by stv

So I was reading this blog over at ProBlogger the other day when point 5 really resonated with me:

Break with tradition: A great idea-sparking suggestion from Seth Godin is to ‘do the never‘ — in other words, to work out what your niche always seems to do, and then do the opposite.”

If everybody else does it the same way, you’re better off doing it differently, and my mom always did say I marched to the sound of a different drummer (seriously, she said it all the time - still does to this day - quite annoying, really).

Faithful readers of this blog (all one of me ;) ) will have noticed a radical shift in the tone and focus recently. What used to be a rather bland and humourless examination of my professional life has now become a series of digressions about all aspects of my life, and I think I’ve got some good reasons for doing so.

Most other SEOs blog primarily about SEO and very little else, which strikes me as being a little 2-dimensional. I’m sure these people have depth, but they seem hesitant to show it. Have you ever invited a work-friend to a party just to find out they’re incapable of talking about anything else besides their job? I have (and I usually ask them to change the subject or leave - no offense, but it’s a party).

So I thought I’d go freeform with my blog and show every aspect of my personality possible. The simple truth of the matter is that I am more than my job, and I like to think that I have something worthwhile to say to just about anyone. So poke around in the different categories on the right hand side - I’ve got lots to say on many different subjects, and there’s likely something you’ll find interesting as well.

 Thanks.
