Attachment Parenting on Wisteria Lane?
As I was blogging last night, my wife was watching the latest episode of Desperate Housewives on TV. Well, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather when the Martha Stewart wannabe character announced she wanted to adopt the concept of the Family Bed while raising her illegitimate child as her own.
As messed up as that may sound, I guess anything that helps get the word out about attachment parenting can’t be a bad thing, even if the same character also made a big deal out of circumcising the kid because just she didn’t want his willy to look funny.
I’m always genuinely surprised when I see the concepts that shaped the way my wife and I decided to raise our children being referenced in mainstream media. For anyone else interested in co-sleeping with their infants, you might also want to check out Three in a Bed. As the pizzeria guy said on the show, you just have to get creative. ;)
Another pleasant surprise recently came when my wife and I rented Knocked Up. There’s a scene where the main characters (Seth Rogen & Katherine Heigl) are shopping for books about childbirth and they end up getting the Birth Partner, which is the same book I read to gain my intimate knowledge of things like mucous plugs and bloody shows (I think I got more out of that scene than most guys).
By the way, it looks like a new version of the Birth Partner is coming out in February 2008. If you’re planning on knocking someone up yourself, I highly recommend you pre-order your copy today.
